Diablo 4 Season 5 seasonal quest walkthrough

The seasonal questline in the Season of the Infernal Hordes is brief, but it serves as a decent introduction to the new mechanics of Diablo 4 Season 5.

  • Of Lambs and Wolves
  • The Rising Hells
  • The Past Behind Us
  • The Seething Mountain
  • An Old and Angry Wound
  • Sins of the Willing
  • The Wages of Hatred

Of Lambs and Wolves

The Season 5 questline begins in Zabinzet rather than Kyovashad, but it kicks off largely the same with a highlighted NPC a few short feet away from your initial spawn point. Speak to Captain Cireska and then question Locran to start the Season of the Infernal Hordes storyline.

From there, you’ll need to visit Locran’s family at their house. The game only gives you a vague outline of where to go, but you can refer to the map below to see the exact location of Locran’s house in Diablo 4 Season 5.

Once you find Locran’s house, head inside. After some brief expository dialogue and a little bit of conflict, you’ll receive your first Mother’s Gift. These are the primary currency of the season. Farming them will grant you access to unique rewards and bonuses.

The Rising Hells

The next step in the Season of the Infernal Hordes storyline is The Rising Hells, which requires you to gather at least 15 Mother’s Gifts so you can familiarize yourself with this season’s primary mechanic.

Mother’s Gifts drop from powerful enemies like elites, champions, bosses, and Hellborne foes. You can find these in dungeons, but Helltides are the best places to find fast drops. Just open your map, find the currently active Helltide, and go slay some demons for a few minutes to complete this quest.

The Past Behind Us

The next bit of story in the early portion of Diablo 4 Season 5 is The Past Behind Us quest, which starts with returning to Istel in Zarbinzet. After that, you’ll be sent to clear The Omath Breach dungeon. You don’t have to deal with the nearby Stronghold if you don’t want to.

The main mechanic of this dungeon requires you to stand near Soulspires and slay enemies within a certain radius to collect Aether. At a certain points in the dungeon, you’ll be able to choose a modifier to make Soulspires more deadly. They’re not that challenging at all, though. Just run through the dungeon once and return to Istel in Zarbinzet to complete this quest.

How to farm Mother’s Gifts in Diablo 4 Season 5

If you want to farm Mother’s Gifts in Diablo 4, then there’s no better method than Helltides. Mother’s Gifts drop from powerful enemies, and there’s nowhere else in Sanctuary with a higher enemy density or ratio of standard enemies to elites. You can still have decent luck in dungeons while you’re farming for items to complete your seasonal build, but Helltides still come out on top overall.

That is, at least until you hit World Tier 3. Once you cross over into World Tier 3, you’ll unlock the new Infernal Hordes mode. This is a wave-based survival mode that goes on endlessly with increasing difficulty, so you’ll walk out of it with a ton of Mother’s Gifts if you manage to reach a high round. It’s just nonstop combat in a small arena, perfect for farming Mother’s Gifts.

How to unlock Infernal Hordes in Diablo 4

To unlock Infernal Hordes in Diablo 4, you must first progress to World Tier 3. At that point — on both the eternal and seasonal realms — you can pick up a quest in Hawezar called The Eyes of the Enemy. This quest will introduce you to Infernal Hordes. It’s an account-wide unlock, so only one character needs to unlock them.

Infernal Compasses are required to access Infernal Hordes. These are obtained from Helltides, whether that be from Chests of Mystery, Chests of Steel, or Doomsayer drops. These can also drop from Whisper Caches and endgame activities like Nightmare Dungeons and The Pit.

Ranging from Tier 1 to Tier 8, Infernal Compasses dictate the difficulty, rewards, and revives of Infernal Hordes. A Tier 3 Infernal Compass will pit you against level 100 monsters with only three revives and a wave cap of six, for example, and it will result in more Legendary items and crafting materials showing up in the reward pool. You can use items called Abyssal Scrolls (obtained as rare drops from all activities) to rank up your Infernal Compasses, too.

Infernal Horde rewards

Surviving Infernal Horde waves will reward you with Spoils of Hell, which contain gold, items with Greater Affxies, and materials for upgrading your gear. These also have good chances of dropping Uniques and other rare items.

To open Spoils of Hell, you need to spend Burned Aether accumulated during Infernal Hordes. Destroying Soulspires and Aetheric Masses or defeating Aether Fiends and Aether Lords during Infernal Horde waves will net you Burned Aether. You can open a Spoils of Hell chest for just 20 Aether, but if you manage to save up 60, you can open the Spoils of Greater Equipment which is guaranteed to drop an item with a Greater Affix.

You can get a ton of gear from Infernal Hordes, but the newest set of Uniques and Legendaries added in Season of the Infernal Hordes have a greater chance of appearing in Spoils of Hell chests.
